how they work

Half square triangles are squares that are cut in half diagonally.                         PERFECT SQUARE makes this process accurate and painless.

Quarter square triangles are squares cut in half diagonally twice.                         Use PERFECT TRIANGLE to create perfect triangles with ease.

These popular quilt pieces can be difficult to make.  The diagonal cuts are on the bias of the fabric and the bias stretches easily causing the finished piece to ripple and not lay flat.  Cutting pieces individually  is time consuming.  Those darn little points have a way of not cooperating under the presser foot and the bias edge can (and most often does) stretch while it is being sewn.

Quilters have tried many ways to alleviate this problem.

Somebody came up with the idea of cutting bias strips which is a terrible waste of fabric and it leaves all the edges bias.

Then there is always the "draw the triangles" method.  This seems to be a good idea, except that drawing on fabric is a pain because it moves and it is time consuming and tedious (all that math and measuring).

Along came a roll of paper with the triangles already drawn on it.  You cut what you need and sew through the paper.  These sheets can be used only once and you must remove all the paper from in and around the sewing. Again, a time consuming chore.

Then there is Perfect Square.  Perfect Square is an iron-on transfer that can be used over and over again.  It comes on paper sheets that are different sizes depending on the size of the square to be made.  All sizes are finished sizes complete with 1/4" seam allowance.

1. Half square triangles are made from two fabrics. This transfer is ironed on to the back of the lighter of the two fabrics.

Solid lines are transfer lines.

2. The fabrics are placed face to face and pinned. Green is the second fabric.

3.  Sew 1/4" on both sides of all the  diagonal lines.

Dotted lines show sewing.

4. Then cut on all the lines.

Each triangle opens into a perfect half square triangle complete with 1/4" seam allowance.  Each triangle on the transfer represents one finished half square triangle.

The above drawing will make 12 half square triangles complete with 1/4" seam allowance all around.  Sizes given are finished sizes.  For example if you need a 3" finished square (3 1/2" unfinished) you would order 3" Perfect Square.
